Footprints, Collabs and Beers Not to Miss
Hello and welcome to the September edition of The Kernel Newsletter!
Last week we travelled down to Kent and had a tour of Hukins Hop Farm with some of the team from Villages and Joyce.
Check out next months newsletter for more on our trip and the hops we brought home with us.
Some of you may remember back in 2024 we raised £611.75 for CALM - Campaign Against Living Miserably, which equated to 50 lifesaving phone calls. This was through the generosity of you, our customers purchasing Table Beer throughout October.
Well, this year we are bringing that back. Following the same format, throughout October we will be donating the profits made from all Table Beer sold via our Online Shop, but this time for an incredible charity
which is close to our head brewer Ben's heart; Footprints Baby Loss Twin & Triplet Support.
Footprints provides vital support to parents and families who experience the death of one or more of their twins or triplets before, during or after birth.
If you would like to find out more about the incredible work that Footprints Baby Loss does, please click the link above for their website, or here for their Instagram.
The following is a list of Table Beer products that will be included:
Table Beer 330ml, Table Beer 500ml, Table Beer 24x330ml, Table Beer 12x500ml, Table Beer Key Kegs. As well as the Table Beer portion of our Core Range Box, Hop Box and Gift Box - Hoppy Edition.
Ben will also be running the London Marathon next year in memory of his son Kit. If you would like to donate, this is Ben's Just Giving Page.
Haynau's Retreat - A collaboration with Newbarns Brewery 5%
The Kernel Brewery and Newbarns Brewery have been closely linked for many years. From colleagues and mentors to friends. So when Newbarns asked us to help them brew their take on a 1930 London Black Lager, we knew we'd be making the trip north.
London is known historically for its dark porters and stouts, and Scotland is known for its lager(s). Which just made this collaboration that much more destined to be.
This was a very unusual brew for us, and I imagine for most brewers today. A few hundred litres into the first runnings, we got the boil going and reduced this to a syrup. In the meantime the rest of the wort was being diverted from the lauter tun back into our mash mixer. After we’d reached a certain gravity, the remaining wort was then added back into the kettle and brought up to a boil.
You can expect to try the roastiest and fullest black lager you've ever had. It’s super clean, but carries the richness from the syrup through to the end result. It’s delicious.
This will be pouring alongside some additional Newbarns Beers at our Spa Road Venue from Wednesday 23rd September.
