Seasonal Releases

Thank you for joining us again! This month, as the days get colder and the nights longer we wanted to draw focus to our autumnal beers. Brews of deep red and chocolate brown full of malt character.

We are releasing our London Brick and Bitter - Simonds 1880, alongside the Dunkel and Brown Stout - London 1812 which came out last month.

Brown Stout - London 1812, 6.2%                                                                                                          Based on an 19th Centuary recipe and making use of Simpsons Malt new 'Pale Export Brown Malt'.                                                                                               This beer tastes appropriately old fashioned, big, brown, burnt toast and marmalade.

Dunkel - Dark Lager
We released our latest batch of Dunkel towards the end of September.                                                                                                                                              Our Dunkel is a traditional Munich-style dark lager, with a traditional rich, round malt character.

London Brick - Red Rye Ale, 6.4%
A much anticipated autumnal release, which is now available online and at our Spa Road Venue.
It's an auburn autumnal dark red. Viscous. Luscious. An aroma of strawberries, raspberries and pine. A heady, fat and bulbous nose, followed by someting slightly dank.
Jammy fruit on the palate, then the rye cleans things up with its peppery spice. Drying finish, turning herbal, spice and bitterness.

Bitter - Simonds 1880, 5.6%

This recipe for a Victorian Bitter is brewed to an 1880 one from Simond's Brewery in Reading, via the archives of the Durden Park Beer Circle. Their notes on the beer state simply: 'Dream Bitter' with a lovely flavour.

A Durden Park Favourite.

Around the brewery we just call it 'Dream Bitter'.

The malt bill predates the common use of crystal malts (which hugely influence a modern bitter's flavour), so comprises just Pale Ale Malt (our regular Maris Otter being ideal for this purpose) and Amber Malt (a lightly toasted malt). Hopped with Goldings all the way through with some Bramling Cross lightly handed the dry hopping duties.

Aroma of citrus, spice and hedgerow leading through to a smooth body, flavours of marmalade and toast, with a touch of tea. Firm bitterness to balance. Perhaps in style closer to how we now consider an ESB or Burton Ale than a modern bitter?

What’s Happening This Month

Continuing our Autumnal theme. Many, I'm sure, will be extremely happy to hear that the Victorian Mild has a firmly fixed date on our brewing schedule. Our annual collaborative brew with Redemption is always a great time and we are very excited to try both iterations side by side when they are released.

Last Tuesday we all downed tools and took a trip south to see our friends at Burning Sky.
We were treated to a tour around their brewery and sipped beers looking out over the beautiful scenery.
Finishing up with lunch at The Trevors Arms, in Glynde. Where the we enjoyed stunning food, perfectly conditioned cask and incredible hospitality.  All made better by having all the team sat around the table.
