The Many Moods of Citra

Our brewers have been hard at work crafting five beers that are all proudly sponsored by Citra ™. Delivering citrussy tropical goodness to your beers for over 20 years.

The first four will be available on our Online Shop, the fifth, well, you'll need to come check out our Citra event next Thursday at The Kernel Spa Road.

First up is Table Beer - Citra 3%

Malt: Pale Marris Otter, Oats
Hops: Citra
Yeast:  Cal Ale

It's pale golden in the glass. The aroma is fresh and green, vibrant and alive, with grassy hops and a garden of flowers lifted by citrus zest. The first sip is broad and rounded, turning quickly juicy with more citrus, then snapping into a crisp, mineral tang. Bitterness lands cleanly. The finish is short. Super refreshing.

Next, Pale Ale - Citra 5.3%

Malt: Pale Marris Otter
Hops: Citra
Yeast:  Cal Ale

Pale golden in the glass.

Aromas of melon, grapefruit, bright citrus, and passion fruit, with generous tropical notes. Think mango and papaya. The palate is rounder and fruit-forward: grapefruit and green grape leading into a gentle tropical warmth. A firm, cleansing bitterness tidies the finish.

Rounding out the hoppier styles is our India Pale Ale - Citra 6.9%

Malt: Pale Marris Otter
Hops: Citra
Yeast:  Cal Ale

Pale golden in the glass.

You can expect a burnished gold in the glass. The aroma blooms with sweet citrus; orange at the fore, wrapped in ripe guava, with wisps of marmalade. The palate is poised and gently juicy: grapefruit, more guava, and a surge of lime, almost lime cordial. Full-bodied, smooth, and round, it carries through with sweet lime before finishing on a pithy, cleansing bitterness.

Export India Porter - Citra 5.8% is beer number four.

Malt: Marris Otter, Chocolate, Crystal, Brown & Black
Hops:
Citra
Yeast:  Cal Ale

We’ve tempered the roast character of the original recipe with some chocolate and crystal malts, but the main difference is that this is hopped in the way we would hop our pale ales and IPAs with late kettle additions and dry hopping.

Citra is the pivot. Its punch of lime, grapefruit, and tropical zest cuts through the dark malts, lifting the beer from brooding to bright. The pour is deep brown, suggesting coffee and cocoa, yet the hops thread in lightness and fruit: think Turkish delight dusted in cocoa, rosewater, and a citrusy, guava-tinged shimmer from Citra’s oils.

On the palate, cacao and espresso meet juicy lime and grapefruit, with Citra’s high-impact aromatics keeping the mid-palate lively. The finish lands dry, roasty, and firmly bitter, the pithy snap of Citra tightening everything.

And finally, our keg only fifth beer is; Biere de Saison 4.8%

Malt: Marris Otter, Wheat, Oats
Hops: Citra
Yeast: House Mixed Culture

A Citra dry hopped version of our Biere de Saison. Fermented with our house mixed culture, developed over time through blending, experimentation, and reuse. It contains a combination of saison yeast, brettanomyces, and a range of wild and commercial yeasts and bacteria; some isolated from our own barrels, others grown from local fruit, and still more sourced from beers we’ve enjoyed drinking ourselves.

Once the saison yeast finishes its work, the beer conditions slowly over weeks and months, as the wild organisms start to shape it further. What begins fresh and lively becomes something deeper and more layered over time.

Buy the set, link below, and try them all yourself at home or come visit our Spa Road Venue on Thursday 11th June to try them all on tap.
