A Showcase of Luminosa
Luminosa: From the Oregon State University Hop Breeding Programme
This week, we’re shining a light on our latest single-hop release: Luminosa, a striking new variety developed by the Oregon State University Hop Breeding Programme and brought to us through our friends at @indiehops. This is a hop with a distinct personality, a vivid fruit-forward profile, and the kind of clarity we look for in single-hop showcases. You’ll find it starring in two new beers: a Pale Ale and an India Pale Ale, both freshly bottled and now available online and at our Spa Road taproom.
Working with a new hop is always a joy — especially one bred with such clear intention and precision. Luminosa was created as part of a focused breeding effort to capture the best of citrus-forward hops like Sorachi Ace, while reducing or eliminating some of the more divisive characteristics often associated with that lineage, such as resinous pine, herbal sharpness, or earthy bitterness. The result is a hop that feels modern and expressive, with a bright, fruit-dense profile that makes it perfect for both pale and hoppy styles.

🌿 Meet Luminosa
Luminosa is a relatively recent addition to the brewing world, first released in the early 2010s by Dr. Shaun Townsend at Oregon State University. It originates from an open pollination of a Sorachi Ace female, though in the glass it’s quite distinct from its Japanese forebear.
This variety was bred to deliver vivid tropical fruit, citrus, and stone fruit aromas while toning down the dill, pine, and earthy bitterness sometimes associated with Sorachi Ace. In the words of Indie Hops, Luminosa brings notes of "peach-mango lemonade, candied orange peel, boysenberry, and papaya" — an evocative profile that immediately caught our interest.
We saw a clear opportunity: to showcase this hop in both a clean, expressive Pale Ale, and a fuller, richer India Pale Ale — two formats, one hop, side by side.
Described by Indie Hops, the variety’s distributor, as offering “peach-mango lemonade, candied orange peel, boysenberry, and papaya,” this hop immediately stood out to us as a hop that could express itself clearly in a single-hop format. It is not overly assertive in bitterness, but offers high aromatic intensity and a rounded flavour profile that can be shaped through fermentation and recipe design.
🍺 Two Beers, One Hop
To properly explore this hops potential, we brewed two beers using the same core malt bill — one a Pale Ale and the other an India Pale Ale. This is a familiar approach for us. As with previous single-hop releases such as our Citra Pale Ale, our aim is to allow the hop to take centre stage.
Single-Hop Pale Ale – Luminosa
This Pale Ale, sitting at around 5% ABV, leads with a soft, juicy character that gives way to a crisp, dry finish. On the nose and palate, you’ll find delicate notes of citrus peel, tropical fruit, and a subtle floral quality that lifts everything. The finish leans clean, and while there’s no overt bitterness, there’s a slight sharpness — something like lemon zest or grapefruit pith — that keeps it refreshing and moreish. It’s a beer we imagine drinking on a warm afternoon, outside, with the sun just beginning to dip.
Single-Hop India Pale Ale – Luminosa
The India Pale Ale version of the beer takes everything a step further. At 6.8% ABV, there’s more malt presence, which adds sweetness and body. That extra depth brings out the hop’s riper tones: guava, mango, and soft, juicy peach come forward more confidently. There’s still a citrus backbone, but it’s wrapped in a rounder, fuller expression. The alcohol adds warmth, but it doesn’t overwhelm — instead, it carries the hop oils and aromas across the palate in a smoother, slower way.
Trying both beers side by side offers a kind of natural tasting session. You can see what the hop does in leaner versus richer contexts, how its character shifts, and how it can be used to build completely different beers with the same core ingredient.
